Woven Together:
Religion & Reproductive Justice
Political Education Series
Tuesdays this fall 7-8:30pm ET. Full Schedule Below.
Join SACReD for a 6-part virtual learning series this fall! We are hosting regular opportunities for the SACReD alliance to learn from our partners across the movement.
As we shift the culture to make Reproductive Justice a lived reality, we recognize that our political, religious, and reproductive lives are all woven together. We are watching the forces of White Christian Nationalism threaten our families and our communities every day. SACReD acknowledges that Christian communities have disproportionately contributed to the rise of Christian supremacy in this country. Therefore, Christian communities and those of us with Christian lineages have a particular responsibility to promote healing, bring new understanding, and challenge the forces of White Christian Nationalism this election cycle and into the future.
We are bringing together experts to cover the legal, political, theological, and cross-movement intersections of religion and reproductive justice. When we understand how all of our struggles are inextricably linked, we can continue to deepen our solidarity in the pursuit of liberation and justice for all.
Join us as we gather the alliance together, deepen our political and theological understandings, and learn from our partners and their work across the movement.
Religious Liberty Law & Abortion Restrictions
Dr. Christine Ryan
Through the abortion debate, Christian conservatives commandeered the authority to define what it means to be “religious” and erased pro-choice religious beliefs from the public square. In reality, religions differ between and among themselves on the issue of abortion. What’s more, the central issues of reproductive justice—how to constitute a family, whether to bear children, how to define marriage, and how to raise children—are also fundamental to religious liberty. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and its attendant proliferation of state restrictions on abortion, people of faith in multiple states have initiated legal challenges to restrictive abortion laws based on the right to religious freedom. Women and faith leaders in several states have filed suit under state constitutions and religious freedom restoration acts, asserting their religious convictions in favor of abortion and challenging the imposition of state-led theological dictates on their lives. In some cases, plaintiffs argue that their state’s abortion ban impedes their ability to practice tenets of their faith involving reproductive decision making. Others claim that abortion restrictions are religiously-motivated laws that favor some religions over others and impose a religious view on those who do not share it. These lawsuits now filed against state abortion bans reclaim religion for pro-chice people of faith. But a religious liberty strategy to challenge abortion bans also presents some risks—including expanding the right to religious exemptions in ways that could be harmful in other contexts. Moreover, religious exemption claims seen as “progressive” have typically not fared as well in courts as conservative claims.
How to Register
Accessing this series is free, with a suggested donation of $25 per workshop, or $150 for the full series.
In this season of political upheaval, we know that our alliance needs the medicine of this series. We have created these learning opportunities in response to our community's questions. For that reason, there is no cost to attend. As we live into our values of Reproductive Justice and our Womanist Ways of Operating, we also want to support the leaders sharing their wisdom with us, and work to cover the administrative costs of running SACReD as an organization. As we practice communal care and collectivism, we offer this series on a sliding scale with a suggested donation of $25 per workshop, or $150 for the full series, and we welcome additional donations if you have the means.
When you go to the registration page, you will find options for individual workshop and full series registration across a range of price points.
To register at no cost, please chose the YARN Series Ticket.
To register on the sliding scale, please choose the single workshop or series ticket that fits your needs.
Don't see an option that works for you? You can also register at the Yarn Series/no cost level and share a love offering with SACReD through our donation page.

Toward Eve's Exodus: Challenging Male-centric Beliefs About Procreation
Dr. Elizabeth Freese
Reproductive Justice is only possible when female human beings (symbolized by Eve) have full personhood, autonomy, agency, and dignity with respect to their capacities for menstruation, conception, gestation, and abortion. How do we take the current, culturally hegemonic story of procreation and transform it to advance Eve's exodus from patriarchal domination? How do we liberate our legal system from creating laws on false biblical narratives of life beginning at conception?
