Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen
Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Healthcare Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) - Nigeria
is a Consultant Public Health Physician and Health Administrator with over 20 years of experience in community health practice in Nigeria. Currently serving as the Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency (EDSPHCDA).
Dr. Izedonmwen obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 2000 and a Masters of Health Planning and Management (MHPM) in 2007 from the University of Benin, Edo State. He also achieved the Fellowship of the Medical College in Public Health (FMCPH) in 2008.
During his tenure at the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) in Abuja from 2010 to 2014, he served as a Public Health Specialist and Country Head for Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E). He worked closely with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) team from Atlanta, GA (USA) to develop the M&E Framework and a 5-year Strategic Plan. Additionally, he successfully developed and implemented the NBTS Electronic Donor Record System (EDRS) to enhance the tracking of blood donations and donor information.
As the Public Health Lead at the Abuja Centre, Nigeria, from 2015 to 2021, Dr. Izedonmwen demonstrated exemplary leadership, resulting in a remarkable 130% increase in blood collection from voluntary donors. His outstanding performance earned him more than four commendation letters from the National Coordinator, recognizing his efforts in exceeding set targets. He was also responsible for supervising the center's budget and monitoring daily execution of contracts.
In October 2022, he was appointed as the Executive Secretary, Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EDSPHCDA) by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki. In this role, he oversees the overall planning, budgeting, implementation, and monitoring of primary healthcare activities across the 18 LGAs in the state.
Dr. Izedonmwen's dynamic approach and visionary mindset have been instrumental in spearheading transformative initiatives for primary health care. His strategic plan encompasses bolstering healthcare infrastructure, empowering the workforce with the right human resources, ensuring access to essential drugs, fostering effective leadership and governance, actively involving communities in decision-making processes and ensuring the use of technology to drive the primary health care system.
Under his leadership, Edo State earned recognition as the first runner-up in the prestigious Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge 2023, securing over 185 million naira.
He also introduced the PHC Client Home-Based Care Scheme which focuses on going back to the days of the community based service where the Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW) identifies risk groups within the community such as pregnant women and children, the elderly, teenager, family unit etc and provide them with basic health services not only in the health centers but also in their homes. Do checkups as well as give health talks on public health issues, family planning, maternal and child health, hypertension, lassa fever, diabetes etc.
Without a doubt, he serves as an inspiration for excellence and positive change in the healthcare landscape. Committed to the well-being of the community, he envisions a healthier, more resilient Edo State focused not only on treatment of diseases but most importantly on preventive care for Edo people.
Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen firmly believes that with unwavering political support from the State Government, dedicated partners, and engaged key stakeholders, the focus of achieving the "primary healthcare of our dreams" in Edo State will become a reality. He tirelessly works to leave an indelible mark on the future of primary healthcare in Edo.
