Kim Mitchell
Executive Director, Carnegie Visual Arts Center
Kim Mitchell serves as Executive Director of the historic Carnegie Visual Arts Center, an institution that functions as both an art museum and educational facility serving North Alabama. She holds a degree in Communications and has pursued studies in Political Science. Before joining the museum, Mitchell held executive leadership positions in both television and radio broadcasting.
Mitchell has been involved with the Carnegie since the early 1990s, helping lead the restoration of the historic Carnegie Library. After years of planning, fundraising, and renovation efforts, the restored building opened in 2003 as the Carnegie Visual Arts Center, becoming Decatur’s first dedicated art museum and education facility.
Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in numerous civic and arts organizations, serving on the boards of the Alabama Art Education Association, Downtown Decatur Redevelopment Association, Junior League of Morgan County, River Clay Fine Arts Festival, and the Urban Arts Initiative. She currently serves on the Executive Board of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, helping guide statewide initiatives that support arts education, cultural development, and creative opportunities throughout Alabama.
Under Mitchell’s leadership, the Carnegie has expanded its role as a regional arts and cultural center, offering exhibitions, educational programming, and community engagement opportunities for audiences of all ages. She is a passionate advocate for the arts and historic preservation and has worked to strengthen partnerships that enhance quality of life and economic development throughout North Alabama.
