Dr. Felipe Romero-Moreno

Principal Lecturer and Research Lead

Dr. Felipe Romero-Moreno is a Principal Lecturer and Research Lead at the University of Hertfordshire’s Schools of Law and Education, specializing in the intersection of emerging technologies, such as generative AI, and fundamental human rights. His research explores the legal and ethical challenges posed by technologies like AI, with a focus on intellectual property, privacy, data protection, freedom of expression, and due process. A respected voice in the field, Dr. Romero-Moreno advises government bodies in the UK and EU, including the UK House of Lords, UK Intellectual Property Office, EU Parliament, and EU Intellectual Property Office. He is a sought-after speaker and consultant, and his work has been featured in leading academic journals and media outlets. Dr. Romero-Moreno holds a PhD and an LLM, with a further LLM by Research in IT/IP law. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association (BILETA).

Kimberly Mai

Kimberly Mai is a Principal Technology Adviser in AI Compliance at the Information Commissioner’s Office and a researcher at University College London. Her PhD research on how humans cannot reliably detect audio deepfakes was featured in international news outlets including the BBC, New Scientist, and The Guardian. Kimberly holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the London School of Economics and a master’s degree in data science and machine learning from University College London. Her research interests include anomaly detection, data protection, and AI governance.

Jessica Rose Smith

Technology Policy Manager

Jess Rose Smith is a Technology Policy Manager at Ofcom, where she is exploring the implications of generative AI on online safety to ensure that Ofcom’s regulatory products reflect the risks posed by this technology. This involves undertaking broad research, including to consider interventions that online services could take to keep their users safe. Jess was part of a team who published two discussion papers: the first, exploring how actors across the technology supply chain could tackle harmful deepfakes, and second, unpacking how services could undertake effective AI red teaming evaluation exercises to reduce the likelihood that a model could produce illegal or harmful content. Previously, Jess worked at the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, where she explored how data and AI could support the delivery of public services.

Declan McDowell-Naylor

Declan McDowell-Naylor is a Principal Policy Adviser at the Information Commissioners Office. He works across numerous areas of policy development, including generative AI, automated decision making, and deepfakes. Before moving into policy, Declan worked in academia, researching and teaching on tech policy, political campaigning, and digital journalism. His PhD focused on the development of connected and autonomous vehicle policy in the United Kingdom and has been published in numerous academic journals.

Jodi Leedham

Technology-Facilitated Abuse Manager

Jodi Leedham is the Service Manager at Refuge's Technology-Facilitated Abuse and Economic Empowerment Team. Jodi joined Refuge in 2019 and initially worked to support survivors of domestic abuse as a Health IDVA. During her time as a Health IDVA she worked closely with the IRIS team to deliver training to local hospitals. Jodi trained with SafeLives and is qualified in delivery of the Domestic Abuse Matters programme for first responders. Since joining the specialist technology facilitated abuse team in 2020, Jodi has supported survivors of abuse directly with complex cases of tech abuse and trained professionals in identifying and supporting survivors of technology facilitated abuse.  The service at Refuge focuses on empowering survivors of abuse to take back control of their devices and stay online safely. The service, founded in 2017, works closely with other services at Refuge to campaign to change legislation that would better protect women and girls against the emerging threats new technologies can pose when abuse and continue to raise awareness of the issue of technology facilitated abuse. Jodi has spoken at international conferences and is a member of several working groups looking to identify best practice for tech developers to ensure safety by design encompasses and better protects women online.

Chanell Daniels

Responsible AI Manager

Chanell is a Responsible AI Manager at Digital Catapult. Prior to this, she led the Community Safety Team at Depop which worked on child online safety, extremism and preparations for online safety regulations, and managed high-risk crisis responses and prevention efforts at Meta. Before joining the tech industry, Chanell worked with the UK Government on consumer protection policy; with the UN on peacekeeping, human rights and governance; and with the EU on environment policy. She is a Visiting Policy Fellow at the University of Oxford Internet Institute, a member of the OpenUK AI Advisory Board, and a member of the British Standards Institute national committee on AI standards.

His primary career objective is to promote creativity and a data-driven culture. Onur obtained his Ph.D. in 2017 in the intersection between Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction. He offer hands-on tech and product experience in a variety of domains, such as Age Assurance, Online Safety, FinTech, Pharma, e-Commerce, aerospace, e-Health, robotics, and social media.

Faye Harrison

Faye specialises in data protection and online safety. She advises UK and international organisations on their data privacy strategies, including developing and maintaining privacy compliance programs, implementing data transfer mechanisms and navigating new product development. Faye’s practice covers a broad spectrum of data protection issues, with a focus on the tech and digital entertainment industries. Her experience includes managing contentious data subject requests and complaints, as well as responding to regulatory investigations and data breaches. She has a particular interest in the protection of children, regularly advising on matters relating to childrens’ privacy and online safety. Her data transfers work includes drafting complex global transfer agreements and advising some of the world’s largest companies on their implementation of Binding Corporate Rules. Faye has a background in commercial IT transactions, having previously advised upon and negotiated a wide range of technology-focused contracts, often with data at their core. She has also spent time on client secondments both in London and overseas, including with US headquartered Big Tech companies, a household name fast food chain and, most recently, a UK regulator.

Kay Chopard is the Executive Director of the Kantara Initiative, a global 'commons' that operates conformity assessment and assurance against its Trust Framework program while nurturing 'beyond-the-state-of-the-art" ideas and developing specifications to transform the state of digital identity and personal data agency domains. Ms. Chopard is the former President and CEO of Chopard Consulting and is the founder of the Women's Leadership Institute. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Women in Identity US.
