Welcome to Crustacean Plantation! In 2019, Angela and her family moved to Tavernier, Florida (the Florida Keys) only to find that they were not the only family in residence. Not long after moving in their 3 dogs; Jimmy Frank, George and Martha started alerting them to the presence of HERMIT CRABS. It was not just one or two hermit crabs but a plethora of wild Hermit Crabs. It appears that their home is perfectly situated by an ocean point 400 feet away and protected county land around their home. Hermit Crabs use their back yard as a short cut in their search for shells and fresh water. It’s essentially a “Hermie Highway”. Angela and family watch over the wild Hermies, while they stop by for a drink of fresh water or a snack under the bird feeder. There are also “Transfer Stations” set up around the yard to allow for Shell Shopping opportunities for those looking to upgrade. The Florida Keys is a Marine Sanctuary and while Hermit Crabs are not endangered, living in a tourist area people love to take home shells as souvenirs of their vacation. Crustacean Plantation hopes to share their story with others in an effort to promote, “take a picture leave the shell” to help preserve wild hermit crabs way of life. Professor of Biology

Dr. Tudge is a reproductive biologist with particular interests in the reproductive biology of invertebrates. His research focuses on the reproductive cells and associated structures, evolutionary mechanisms, and reproductive behaviors of marine decapod crustaceans (shrimps, crabs, crayfish and lobsters). He also has experience dealing with other invertebrate and vertebrate groups and his knowledge of reproduction in crustaceans can be directly applied to other taxa. He uses this interest in crustacean reproduction to investigate the evolutionary history (phylogeny) of particular crabs in the marine environment and his work has direct application to aquaculture of commercial species and conservation of marine and freshwater crustaceans.
