System Sterile Compounding Services Specialist
George R. Smith, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCSCP, is currently serving as the System Sterile Compounding Services Specialist at Prisma Health, a 3200-bed health-system in South Carolina and Tennessee.
In a sterile compounding career that has spanned over 20-years, Dr. Smith has held many leadership roles transversing home infusion, sterile compounding automation to health-system pharmacy. Dr. Smith is double board-certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and sterile compounding (BCSCP) through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.
In his current Prisma Health role, Dr. Smith oversees 25 sterile compounding areas, including 2 centralized compounding suites and 6 ambulatory oncology infusion facilities. Prior to returning to Prisma Health in in 2023, Dr. Smith was the Director and Pharmacist Consultant of a robotic sterile compounding automation device for over 6 years where he gained and enhanced his expertise in cleanroom design, USP <797> Category 3 compounding operations, process validation, product development and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in the 503B Outsourcing Facility space. Dr Smith is also serving as a Clinical Instructor of Sterile Compounding for the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy.
Dr. Smith is as a current member of the ASHP Section of Inpatient Pharmacists Section Advisory Group for Compounding Practice, an AJHP peer reviewer and a field-tester for ASHP’s Compounded Sterile Preparation Intensive Studies for Recertification. Additionally, Dr. Smith is a selected member of the USP Compounding Expert Committee for the 2025-2030 cycle and an appointed member of the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy Compounding Committee for Sterile Compounding.
