Jon Belfield

Chair of CIBSE AI Working Group

After the completion of an apprenticeship in Machining and Fitting followed by a BSc in Engineering with Business Studies in the mid-1980’s, Jon started his career in the Building Services sector with Landis and Gyr as a Sales Engineer and progressed to a Senior Project Engineer. Over the subsequent decade Jon developed his skills/experience of controls through a variety of different challenges ranging from telephone-controlled lighting systems to medical electronics, process controls and machine automation. After 12 years of controls experience, he identified a gap in the market for a customer-led (as opposed to product-led) controls company and as a result InTandem Systems Ltd was formed. This 35+ year career has enabled Jon to experience and contribute to an extensive range of projects and initiatives in the controls sector and to invest significantly in the development of future BMS Controls Engineers. He is a past President of the BCIA, a Fellow of CIBSE, a CIBSE Council Member, Chair of the CIBSE IT & Controls Group, Chair of the CIBSE AI Working Group, a Chartered Engineer, a UCL Industry Advisor, an EPA Assessor for the BMS Trailblazer Apprenticeship and promotes professional development for all Building Services Engineers.

Joe Short

Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder

Joe Short is the Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder of Demand Logic. With over 30 years in the sustainability sector, Joe leverages his background in physics, renewable energy, and sustainable development to drive innovation and lead the scientific and technical strategy for Demand Logic’s platform. He co-founded the company in 2007, building on his previous work in promoting demand response policies in Parliament and as an environmental advocate. His expertise in data science underpins the company’s focus on energy efficiency and building performance analytics.

Michael Beaven

Director, Arup Fellow

Mike is a CIBSE Fellow and Director and Fellow at Arup. He has worked in the UK, USA, Japan and Australia with many of the world’s leading architects, spending several years co-leading the integrated practice Arup Associates to push the boundaries of holistic design. He has been responsible for numerous world firsts and award-winning projects for innovative designs that seamlessly integrate sustainability, wellness and pioneering innovation. Applying digital to the built environment Mike led Arup’s Automation workstream for a number of years and championed global collaboration to produce common data standards.

Asad Kwaja

Associate Director, Sustainability & Decarbonisation Advisory

Asad Kwaja is an Associate Director within AECOM’s Decarbonisation Advisory team. With expertise in designing and delivering energy networks, he works across the built environment to create innovative low-carbon energy solutions for local authorities and energy service providers. Asad has been instrumental in advancing research and guidance on heat recovery from data centres and driving cross-industry collaboration to accelerate projects that support the energy transition.

Felix Cox

Associate Director, Data Centres

Felix Cox is an Associate Director and Lead Mechanical Engineer within AECOM’s MEP Data Centre team. He is an elected committee member of the CIBSE Data Centres Group (DCG), where he contributes to industry guidance, events, and knowledge sharing. Felix has a particular interest in AI-ready, liquid cooled data centres, sustainability and waste heat recovery systems with a focus on improving the overall energy efficiency of data centres.

Ben Preece

Regional Sales Director

Ben Preece is Sales Director, UK and Ireland for Automated Logic and has spent his entire career of more than 20 years working within the built environment, making buildings better; making them more intelligent, intuitive, connected and hugely more efficient way before the phrase smart-building had even been coined. He has a diverse background having worked for manufacturers such as Satchwell, Sauter and Philips Lighting as well as holding senior positions within independent dealers and also ran his own successful consultancy business in the UK consulting on all things BMS to M&E contractors and mechanical engineering consultants. He is a self-confessed buildings nerd and fanatical about clever technology and how to best apply it to the built environment.
